Gravity & Inertia
In this episode of Beakman’s World, Beakman tackles two invisible forces that decide whether you stay put or keep going: gravity and inertia. Lester ends up on the wrong end of a Jupiter strength bowling ball, and a very dead Sir Isaac Newton drops by to explain why seatbelts are non negotiable. Don and Herb, watching from the South Pole, are relieved to hear there is no bottom to the Earth.

Two laws about staying put, and not staying put
Gravity and inertia sound like two separate ideas, but Beakman treats them as two halves of the same question: what makes an object do what it does? Gravity is the invisible pull that decides where “down” is, strongest wherever there is the most mass, which is why Jupiter tugs over twice as hard as Earth. Inertia is the other half of the story: an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion keeps moving, until something else steps in to change it. Put the two together and you get everything from why a dropped bowling ball behaves the way it does to why a car full of people needs seatbelts the moment it stops suddenly.
Beakman’s demonstrations
Beakman uses a bowling ball to make Jupiter’s gravity feel real, showing that the same ball weighing 16 pounds on Earth would tip the scales at 40 pounds there. For inertia, he calls in the ghost of Sir Isaac Newton, who balances four eggs on glasses under a sheet of cardboard, then knocks the cardboard away with a broom so the eggs drop neatly into place, a demonstration of an object staying put until something acts on it. Newton’s crash dummy, Fuzzy, finishes the job by riding a toy car into a wall to show what happens to a moving object when nothing stops it in time, which is exactly why the segment ends on seatbelts.
Try this at home
The glasses and eggs trick. Balance a piece of stiff card over the mouths of some glasses, stand an egg on each one, then swipe the card away in one quick, flat motion with an adult supervising. Newton’s first law does the rest, the eggs stay put and drop straight down into the glasses.
