What do humans, whales, and tigers have in common? They’re all mammals! In this episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy, Bill explores mammals, explaining what makes them unique and how they survive in different environments.

What Makes a Mammal?

Mammals have three key traits: hair or fur, warm-blooded bodies, and milk production. These features help mammals adapt to life on land, in water, and even in the air. Unlike reptiles and amphibians, mammals regulate their body temperature, allowing them to live in both cold and warm climates.

Not all mammals are the same! For instance, placental mammals give birth to live young. On the other hand, marsupials raise their babies in pouches. Even more surprisingly, monotremes like the platypus lay eggs! Bill explains how these groups evolved and what makes each one special.

Experiments and Demonstrations

Bill makes learning about mammals fun with exciting experiments! A body heat test shows how mammals maintain their temperature. Furthermore, a fur and feather comparison explains why mammals have hair instead of scales. Bill also performs a milk production demonstration, illustrating why only mammals nurse their young.

In another experiment, Bill explores echolocation, showing how bats navigate in the dark. Additionally, he explains how whales, dolphins, and sea lions evolved to live in the ocean, even though they breathe air like land mammals.
