Strum a guitar, hit a drum, sing a note. Every one of those sounds is really the same thing: vibrating air. In this episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy, Bill shows how the science of music comes down to waves, patterns of pitch and rhythm that our ears turn into feeling.

Sound is a pattern in the air
Bill hooks a microphone up to an oscilloscope so we can watch a low note draw slow, spread out waves and a high note draw fast, tight ones. A musical note is a regular wave. Noise is a jumble of many waves at once. Arrange notes at different pitches, spacing and volumes and you get music, which every culture on Earth has invented for itself.

Bill Nye’s demonstrations
Bill plays low and high notes on a keyboard hooked up to an oscilloscope so you can see the waves stretch out and squeeze together. He strikes a tuning fork that vibrates 440 times a second and presses it to a fiddle to make the whole instrument sing. Then he explains the ear canal, the eardrum, the tiny bones and the seashell shaped cochlea that turn wobbling air into signals your brain hears as music.
Try this at home
The singing can. Take an empty tin can with both ends cut off, ask an adult to help with the sharp edges, and stretch a piece of clear plastic wrap across one end held with a rubber band. Glue a single sequin to the middle of the plastic. Turn out the lights, shine a torch on the sequin so it reflects a spot on the wall, and sing loudly into the open end. The reflected spot dances, because your voice makes the plastic vibrate exactly the way the air is vibrating.
